Calendula is a widely cultivated plant and can be grown easily in sunny locations in most kinds of soils. Although perennial, it is commonly treated as an annual plant.
Pot marigold florets are considered edible and are often used to add color to salads, added to dishes as a garnish, and also used in lieu of saffron.
Flowers were used in ancient Greek, Roman, Middle Eastern and Indian cultures as a medicinal herb. It was also used a dye for fabrics, foods and cosmetics.
The flowers can also be used as a textile dye.
The yarns in the picture were dyed with different mordants from left to right, alum, tin, and iron. Please refer to a dye book for details.
