Annatto Seed, Bixa orellana L., Natural Dye and Spice
Annatto is also know as roucou or achiote, and is the seeds of the achiote trees that grow in tropical and subtropical regions.
The seeds are sourced to produce a yellow to orange food coloring .
Annatto is commonly used in Latin American and Caribbean cuisines for both a coloring and flavor.
Historically, it has been used as coloring in many cheeses , butter margarine , and also non dairy foods , because in the times that cows are fed hay, there are no carotenoids in the feed to be transferred through their system to produce yellow butter.
The color produced during textile dyeing will vary depending on water ph , water temperature, and mordant.
Mordants used in yarn samples are from left to right Alum, Tin, Chrome.
Enough to dye one half pound or more of dry fiber.
Refer to a natural dye book for more detailed instructions.
